Last Minute Rug Switch

The final week of the ORC could not have gone LESS smoothly, specifically when it came to the rug for our dining room makeover.  But thankfully, in the end, it all came together!

I had originally ordered a natural jute rug with a zebra print border for our dining room - simple but with some interesting flair.

BUT just a couple of days prior to the deadline/reveal, I had received an e-mail notifying me that the rug was actually out of stock.  The company's inventory system had incorrectly shown it being in stock when I placed the order.  If I had not been following up on my order status, I'm not sure they would have ever caught the error?!  (Note: I have ordered and recommended rugs from this company before without issue, so I'm hoping this was a one-time glitch.)

Anyhow, I had to scramble for a last minute replacement.  Oh goodness, finding an 8x10 or 8x11 area rug that is IN-STOCK is no easy feat!  Most had to be special-ordered.  So, want to know a secret?!  I put two 5x8 rugs together to solve my problem!  It's a design-trade trick, especially when you need larger-scaled rugs. :)

The rug itself is beautiful and added another dimension to the room.  It's very soft underfoot, has a pretty color scheme green, cream, black/gray (which ties in the wallpaper), and boasts a lovely ikat pattern.  That being said, I'm just not sure if it's right for the space.

My hubby and kids like the color and pattern it injected (I do too), but I'm uncertain if the pattern competes too much with the graphic wallpaper.  I am all for taking design risks with the bold pattern-on-pattern combination (kinda like when you pair gingham with floral for an outfit), but my conservative nature is giving me doubts.  What do you think?  Go bold or keep looking?  I would love your constructive opinions! :)

  1. You know I love the green, maybe the solution is to keep some color but in a more subtle (neutral) pattern. Something that reads as solid from a distance so it doesn't compete with the wallpaper.

    1. Thanks for your input, Maggie! You know, that's exactly why I'm torn about the rug. It photographs like it competes with the wallpaper, but in person, it appears more subtle for whatever reason. I'm keeping an open mind on this, and I really appreciate your insight. :)

  2. I love the green rug and I am so happy that you went with it. It complements wallpaper nicely and adds that little extra zing. I don't think the other rug would have done that.

    1. Aww, thanks Jess! I really love your design eye, and I truly appreciate your take on this. I thought of you when I wrote this post, kinda figuring you'd tell me to stick with the rug. :) I agree that the other rug would have been the "safe" choice. What's design without pushing the limits, right?!

  3. I know a lot of people liked the green rug. I will say this in a low whispery voice: "I don't love it".

Being the same shape with the also powerful wallpaper, I find they do compete and the hues don't appear to compliment each other (at least in the photos). It also looks (to me) that it could use a border to define it.

I would change it BUT, if it makes you smile every time you see it, then keep it. I find that's the one and only rule when it comes to personalizing our decor.

If it makes you happy, it is perfect.

(ps. I hope I was not too upfront with my opinion.)

    1. Hi! Thanks for your honest input. I'm obviously feeling mixed about the rug, so that's why I asked for my readers to weigh in. I'm still undecided. :)
