Home Renovation & Design Service Updates

Summer is in full swing around here!  My boys are out of school, hence the recent blog silence in case you haven't noticed. 😆  By the way, thank you so much for the kind feedback on my last post, where I shared our "earthy eclectic" summer home style!

If you'd like to stay updated on life around here, feel free to follow me on Instagram @cadinteriors.  I post more regularly there. 😉 I also recently learned how to use the IG stories feature, so you can catch me previewing behind-the-scene projects and personal happenings over there.

HOME RENOVATION

The focus of our upcoming home renovations will be on the exterior of the house.  The old sliding doors will be replaced, the exterior board and batten will be redone, the courtyard patio will be re-surfaced, the front exterior (elevation, door/entry, window trim, etc.) will be changed, etc.  I will be documenting the progress on the blog once there is something visually interesting enough to share. 😊

On a less interesting note, we are also addressing and investing $$$ in some structural improvements (boo-hoo).  This put a big dent in our shed conversion plans, but it's something that has to be done.  We still plan to convert the shed, but the scope and timing has been affected by the structural requirements.

DESIGN SERVICES

Summer Home Tour

Today is the last day of school for my kiddos, which means summer has officially arrived in our household!  Before my boys and their friends completely take over the house, I thought I'd show you around.  (If you caught my Instagram story, then you know the kids got a head start... 😜)

I'm joining a group of interior stylists and bloggers this week on a Summer Eclectic Home Tour hosted by Jess of Domicile 37!  Warmest welcome if you are stopping by from This Is Our Bliss!  If this is your first visit here, welcome to our home, a 60+ year old fixer upper that we have been renovating for the past four years and counting.

I don't really do any seasonal decorating per se aside from the holidaysbut I do make minor decor tweaks between the cooler fall/winter and warmer spring/summer months.  Right now, the house has an "earthy eclectic" summer vibe, with lots of natural textures and fresh greenery.

I pulled together on-hand decor that fell within a white/cream, blue, and black color pallet to style the family room. Our summer home refresh was all about using what we already have, especially since we just spruced up this bedroom.

Since the color scheme is relatively neutral (except for the wall tapestry), I mixed various patterns - stripes, ikats, abstracts, and geometrics - to keep things eclectically interesting!

Plants are a favorite year-round accessory despite having a black thumb so you'll find them scattered throughout our home.  I love the organic living element they add in a space, plus the splash of "green" is always welcome!  The fern is still going strong under my watch, although it's only been a couple months since I bought it. 😉  I also clipped several branches from the yard to "assemble" the plant in the vignette above.

In the kitchen, I hung a vintage painting with a pretty landscape subject.  The blues, greens, and browns feel so serene.  It was a recent thrift store find for $10.00!  I have been drawn towards vintage seascapes and landscapes lately.

I usually jot down our weekly dinner menu on the chalkboard, which helps me plan the grocery shopping for the week.  It also helps alleviate the inevitable "what's for dinner" question.

One day, I'll get around to installing a window treatment above the sink.  Right now, our neighbor's tree is providing a decent visual privacy barrier between us. 😄

Yesterday, I finally revealed the before and after transformation of this wall area in the kitchen.  We finished the project last November! 😜

The shelves were styled with some treasures from our travels, as well as a vintage painting that was especially meaningful to my husband.  The woven and wood accents also add an organic and textural element to the kitchen.

Our dining area, which is located between the family room and kitchen, is small but packs the biggest punch within the entire great room!

The wallpapered focal wall makes an eye-catching graphic statement, so I let it shine by keeping the rest of the dining room decor rather simple.

I placed tall branches in a glass vase to freshen up the bar cart, and put fresh fruit in candle holders to dress the table.  The lemons and tree branches were picked from our yard. 😊

Kitchen "Wall" Reveal

Hello, hello!  It's been awfully quiet on the blog lately - due to life and behind-the-scene happenings - but I'm back today to do a little reveal.  I am FINALLY sharing the before and after transformation of the kitchen wall project we finished last year!  Better late than never... 😆

BEFORE

modern interior kitchen design dark wood black island white cabinets

We have a wall behind the kitchen island that we left alone when we renovated the kitchen.  I preferred to keep the area "open" since we incorporated more than enough functional built-in cabinetry in the kitchen.

You can see the full kitchen reveal, including before and after photos, here.

AFTER

We added our own form and function to the wall by adding this double-duty "household workspace" and serving area for when we entertain.  This set-up addresses aesthetics and function while maintaining the "openness" I wanted.  My younger son does his homework here!

The wall space between the lower shelf and table also acts as our "family command center" (we also have a wall calendar nearby that isn't shown).  We post notes, reminders, school memos, etc. on the trio of upcycled cork boards that line the wall.  I simply wrapped three bulletin boards that we already had in a Nate Berkus patterned fabric to marry them together!  The fabric-covered bulletin boards look more visually appealing too.

Right now, the space is styled for our summer home tour, which I'll be sharing on the blog TOMORROW!  But when we entertain, we do use the table as a serving area for drinks or desserts.  It also comes in handy when we need extra seating space.

SHELVING DETAILS

Rather than buying reclaimed wood shelves (we have bigger priorities on the renovation front), we DIY'd the look instead.  We stained and sealed two six-foot long wood lumbar pieces (dimensions 1 1/2 in. H x 7 1/2 in. D x 72 in. W), then mounted them to the wall using heavy-duty brass brackets.  It was such a quick, easy, and inexpensive project.  The most difficult part was finding the studs.

Here's another look at the before and after transformation of this part of the kitchen!
