Design Project: Transitional Dining Room

If you give me a healthy design budget, you bet I'll live through you when designing your space. 😄 This was certainly the case because this client gave me a significant furnishings and decor budget for her dining room. The foundational details, like the hardwood floors, baseboards/crown and painting, were done in conjunction with other rooms (so it was excluded from the budget).

The space had a great starting foundation. I especially loved the tray ceiling, which I provided suggestions for. Architectural details distinguish and elevate a room!

DESIGN BRIEF

The design brief was straightforward. The client told me what she needed, then entrusted the entire design process to me!

  • Storage
  • Dining table
  • Seating
  • Lighting
  • Rug (optional)

FLOOR PLAN

The largest "obstacle" was the size of the room, which is ~11' x 12'. I needed to squeeze in ample storage, as requested, and I needed to make sure there was enough space to pull out all the chairs comfortably relative to the other furnishings. In addition, since the dining room opens directly to the living room, the adjoining spaces needed to visually flow together (Note: I didn't recommend wallpaper or other wall treatments, including paint color, since the homeowner just painted. The dining and living rooms also share a long wall with no "break". Instead, framed vintage art and other decor was suggested to enhance the space.)

The budget allowed me to source a stunning designer light fixture and a unique blue/ebony/brass sideboard cabinet, both of which the client approved. The large statement light fixture will definitely bring the "wow" to the space. The dining chairs are also custom orders. The dining table and tall storage cabinet are retail, and were also a good chunk of the budget.

Tip: If you can swing it, I always recommend to invest in timeless "quality" products upfront. It can save you money in the long run, since it should last a long time with proper care. Well-built furniture can be scored second-hand too. Go vintage or scour antique stores to maximize your budget!

I also provided an inspiration board for the client to consider a tray ceiling treatment...

She liked the concept of doing a contrast ceiling color. 👍 This is just a glimpse of the design package. If you're interested in a room design or consultation, please feel free to contact me!
