Design Trend: Shiplap

Everywhere I turn (online), I see images of rooms covered with shiplap!  I think HGTV's Fixer Upper series has given new "attention" to the design element, thereby attributing to its recent gain in popularity.

For those unfamiliar, shiplap is a type of wooden board (like pine or other inexpensive wood) that's commonly used in the construction of barns, sheds, and the like.  It is basically wood paneling made from rough-sewn or milled wood boards.

In kitchens...

Shiplap isn't just for the walls.  You'll find them on ceilings too!  Shiplap can be left in its natural wood state, painted white, or painted in whatever color you prefer!

I like shiplap because it is architecturally interesting.  It adds a lot of depth and dimension to a space.  I've been mulling over adding shiplap to our own home.  Perhaps cladding one of the fireplaces, or installing it on the ceiling?!  The possibilities are limitless...
